VRT news and current affairs programmes get a make over

Flemish national broadcaster VRT announced a new look and set design for its news and current affairs programmes. They've been working on it for several months now, and the result is simply stunning. For people who knew the previous look, it doesn't seem an earthshattering restyle, but that's what I like about it. It's a very elegant step forwards in the design logic VRT has taken since 2008.

So this new look builds upon the current styling, but moves it up a notch with virtual reality elements and a fully integrated set design.

In the studio, a circular 270-degrees set has been erected, which is cut halfway by an half-open wall, almost like you'd get in a diner. The motorized camera's move through this wall and the software uses this as a feature to project graphical virtual reality elements onto the screen.

The news opens with a virtual clock indicating current time, before it morphs into the logo of the news programme. It's similar to what Danish broadcaster DR has done with its TV Avisen. I'll talk about DR's amazing news very soon.

It's very cutting edge and the techniques used here are also reminiscent of what ZDF has used for their mammoth news design.

Overall, I think VRT's news department has put itself amongst the more innovative news-casters in the northern hemisphere, like Danish DR, the aforementioned ZDF and NRK.
